You are asking that question! Safer if you did not do it….

The starter is situated on the side of the engine, engine is that noisy lumpy metal thing at front of your jeep, the front of your Jeep is with those shiny & orange things built into that funny looking steppy thing

And old starter will sometimes work if you give it a firm tap with a hammer. (The gears wear over time and the teeth don’t line up; a tap will help them align again). This is only a TEMPORARY solution, but if you can drive the jeep to the auto parts store, then you’ll be able to make sure you have the right part by commparing the the existing starter, and it will be easier to install immediately after pulling out the original starter)

Follow the wires from your battery and you’ll find a cylenoid, alternator, ground, and starter. The starter is the component bolted to the engine. (The alternator is also, but that has a belt around a pulley on it. The starter does not.) If you’ve purchased the new starter, simply study the part and look for the same one under the hood. It’s probably closer to the ground than the hood, so be prepared to raise the Jeep and crawl underneath. (ALWAYS make sure a raised vehicle is secured before getting under it!)

It’s not difiicult to change. First remove the negative terminal from your battery to avoid shocks and accidentally shorting out part of your electrical system. Then remove any wires from the starter, noting where they were attached. (You might want to label them.) Lastly, undo the bolds that mount it to the motor. If you’ve got a socket set and a couple screwdrivers, you have everything you need.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

    I hope this helps!
